Events at Home and in the Majlis: What Changes Outside a Hall

Many UAE occasions are held at home or in the majlis rather than a hall: the signing of the contract, a small engagement, a new baby reception, family evenings. Setting up at home is not a scaled-down hall — the constraints are entirely different, and most problems happen in things unrelated to design.
The door and the corridor decide what can come in
Before any discussion of design: how wide is the majlis door? Is there a staircase? Does the lift take long pieces? A three-metre kosha is built from sections, but the longest section still has to pass the door.
Measure the door, the corridor and the corner the team must turn. Those three numbers prevent a design being cancelled at the last moment.
Power is the real constraint
A home is not a hall. Lighting, sound and extra cooling draw more than a domestic breaker carries, and the result is a cut in the middle of the event.
Ask how many sockets the majlis has and across how many breakers. Avoid running lighting and sound on the same circuit as the kitchen. For larger events at home we prefer low-draw lighting over heavy fixtures.
Floors and walls are not yours to fix into
In a hall you can sometimes fix to the wall. At home you cannot. Everything must stand on its own: free bases, hidden weights, not a single nail.
Watch the floor. Marble scratches easily under metal bases and carpet tilts tall pieces. Ask the team for protectors under every base — a question that is always forgotten and costs a repair.
Installation time inside an occupied home
Installation cannot start at six in the morning as it can in a hall, and the family is living there while the work happens.
Agree a realistic window — four to six hours before the event — the route the team will use, and where crates are placed. Assign one room for preparation rather than letting work spread through the house.
Hospitality at home needs back-of-house space
Food needs somewhere to be prepared, heated and washed up. A domestic kitchen alone is not enough for a hundred guests.
Set aside a back area — a room or part of the yard — for the hospitality team. If there is none, choose hospitality that needs no heating on site. That decision belongs to choosing the menu, not to the night itself.
Neighbours and departure
A home event ends in the street: cars, noise and a late departure. Agree a time for the sound to stop, and arrange parking in advance if the numbers are large.
