Henna, Melcha and Malka Nights: Differences and Setup

Three nights often mentioned together and set up in completely different ways. Confusing them is why so many events look either incomplete or overdone.

Henna night

A warm family evening, closer to a gathering than a formal reception. Good setup rests on three things.

**Seating:** floor seating or low couches that encourage people to stay and talk. Formal high chairs make the night feel like a short reception.

**The henna corner:** it needs strong directed light, not dim atmosphere. The artist needs real light to work, and guests need light to photograph the design. This is the most forgotten detail.

**A photo corner:** a simple backdrop and steady light. No full kosha needed — a good corner is enough.

Traditional colours are green and gold, though the modern direction in the UAE leans white and ivory with copper or timber accents.

Melcha

Melcha is closer to a formal celebration of the marriage contract. It needs an elegant kosha but **smaller than the wedding one**, clear seating for both families, and organised coffee and dates service from the moment of entry.

The common mistake is using a full wedding kosha, which robs the wedding night of its distinction and leaves guests feeling they have seen everything twice.

Malka

Malka is usually broader than melcha and closer to a small reception, with more guests and a buffet. It needs a medium kosha, table lighting, and a sound system — because speeches and the zaffa are central to the night.

One rule across all three

Make each night less grand than the one after it. If the henna outshines the wedding, the wedding will feel smaller no matter what you spend. The build-up creates the sense of a peak, and it is the cheapest design tool available to you.

Repeated mistakes

Using the same kosha on two nights — the photographs blur together · dim light in the henna corner · forgetting a gift corner at the melcha · a weak sound system at the malka despite speeches and a zaffa · not separating the guest entry path from the hospitality path.
