Wedding Lighting: What Nobody Sees and Everyone Feels

Lighting is the line people cut first and the line that shows in every photograph. A twenty-thousand kosha under poor lighting looks cheaper than one at half the price under considered lighting. That is not an opinion; it is what we see at every event.

Four layers, not one

**Layer one — the kosha.** Warm, from the sides rather than the front, so features are not flattened. Direct frontal light flattens faces in photographs and shows every flaw.

**Layer two — the walkway.** Dim and aimed downward, guiding steps without dazzling. A walkway lit from directly above throws hard shadows under the eyes.

**Layer three — the tables.** Very soft; its job is that guests can see each other and their food. A dark table area makes guests leave early without knowing why.

**Layer four — architectural lighting** on walls and ceiling. This is what turns an ordinary hall into a room that looks designed, and it is the cheapest layer and the most neglected.

Spotlights: the strongest tool and the most misused

A spotlight on the bride's entrance creates a moment — provided it tracks the walk rather than sitting on one point. A fixed spot means she walks into the light and out of it, and the moment is lost.

Ask for manual follow or a pre-programmed path, and agree the spot starts on the first note. Check intensity too: an over-bright spot makes the bride lower her eyes in every photograph.

Moving heads: when they work and when they ruin

Moving heads suit the zaffa and the dance set, and do not suit dinner or formal photography at all. Insist on an operator who knows when to bring them down. Without one they become a disco at the wrong moment and ruin the dinner photographs.

Lighting truss

A truss carries fixtures above the hall and distributes them evenly. You need it in large halls and tents; you do not need it in small, low-ceilinged rooms where it becomes visual clutter. Ask about install height, who verifies stability, and whether the venue requires a permit.

Mistakes that cost photographs

Strong light directly behind the kosha — a black silhouette where the couple should be · cold white light on warm skin — renders it grey · forgetting to light the photo corner, so guests queue in the worst light in the room · relying on the venue's own lighting alone.
