Wedding Photography: What to Ask Before You Book

The kosha comes down within hours, the flowers wilt, the guests go home. What remains of the night is the photographs. Yet photography is usually the last thing booked, on the smallest budget and after the shortest conversation. This guide covers what actually makes the difference.
Ask about cameras, not hours
One photographer cannot be in two places. The couple entering needs a camera in front of them and a camera on the faces of the family watching. With one camera you always lose one of those two pictures, and you will not know which until the files arrive.
Ask plainly: how many photographers attend, and where does each stand during the zaffa? A clear answer tells you more about their organisation than any portfolio.
Lighting is settled before the night, not during it
The most disappointing photographs are the ones where the couple is a dark silhouette against a glowing kosha. The cause is not the camera — it is a strong light directly behind their heads, and that is decided when the kosha and its lighting are designed.
Put the photographer and the lighting technician in one conversation before the night, even for ten minutes. Ask whether the backlight is stronger than the front light, and whether any surface will bounce the flash.
Moving coloured lights are lovely to the eye and harsh on faces in photographs. Ask for warm white during the entrance and the formal pictures.
Video is not moving photographs
Photography and video are different trades with different tools. Video needs clean sound, which means a microphone near the speaker rather than the one on the camera in a hall with a DJ. If the father's speech matters to you, ask about sound specifically.
Agree on the difference between the short film and the full recording. A three-to-five minute film is what actually gets watched and shared; the full version is archived and rarely opened. Both are worth having, for different reasons.
The printed album is a separate decision
Digital files stay on a phone and are forgotten. A printed album is what gets opened years later — but it is usually ordered once everything else is over, when choosing has become a chore.
Agree at the start on the number of images, the album size, and who selects. Splitting the selection usually gives the best result: you know who matters, and the photographer knows which frame survives on paper.
Mistakes we see repeatedly
Booking photography in the final week · not telling the photographer when the zaffa starts · relying on a relative's phone for video · never agreeing a delivery time in writing · and not naming one person from the family who knows who must appear in the formal pictures.
