Event Colours: Choosing a Palette That Works in the Room and in Photographs

Colour is the first thing decided and the last thing tested. A palette is chosen from a photograph on a phone in daylight, then installed in a hall with warm light in the evening — and comes out entirely different.
Three colours, no more
The rule that works: one dominant colour across most of the surface, a second supporting it, and a third as a small accent covering no more than a tenth of the scene.
The more colours, the less expensive it photographs. Events that look costlier than they were are usually the ones with fewer colours, not more.
Light changes colour before you see it
Warm light — the most common in halls — pulls white towards ivory and pink towards peach, and leaves blue flat and lifeless.
Cool light does the opposite: gold turns grey, beige loses its identity.
Test the colour under the actual lighting before committing, not in a showroom and not in daylight.
Colours that behave badly in photographs
**Deep red**: bleeds onto the faces of anyone seated near it, making skin look flushed.
**Light green**: casts a pale tinge on faces under strong light.
**Neon and any saturated colour**: takes over the camera's exposure and darkens everything else.
**Pure white under strong light**: loses its detail and becomes an empty white area.
This does not forbid these colours — it places them away from faces: at the edges and heights rather than close to the couple.
Start from what cannot change
The hall's carpet, walls and curtains are colours you cannot alter. Start there.
A beautiful palette over deep red carpet fails however well it works on its own. Ask about the venue's colours first and build with them rather than against them.
The dress decides more than you think
The bride is the centre of every photograph. The colour behind her should separate her, not swallow her. A white dress against a brilliant white kosha leaves her flat and edgeless in the frame.
Ask for contrast, even slight: a shade warmer or cooler directly behind the dress. Two steps is enough.
