Event Sofas and Seating: Comfort Shows in the Photographs

The sofa is where the couple sits all evening and appears in most of the photographs — yet it is usually chosen last, from a catalogue. This page explains what separates seating that looks good from seating that works.
Size before style
Kosha seating is measured against the stage width, not the photograph. The rule we work to: sofa width between a quarter and a third of the kosha width. Wider swallows the design behind it; narrower leaves the couple looking suspended in space.
Height matters as much. Very low seating makes sitting in a long dress difficult and the front camera angle awkward. A comfortable seat height is 45–50cm.
The back decides the photograph
A high back frames the couple and steadies the image but hides part of the kosha. A low back shows the whole design but leaves the frame open. A busy kosha needs a low back; a simple one carries a high back well.
Guest seating and majlis
For home events and majlis settings, floor seating holds more people in the same area but does not suit older guests. The practical arrangement is floor seating in the centre with chairs or sofas around the edges.
Allow 60–70cm of floor seating per person, and count a three-seater as three people, not four, however generous it looks.
Fabric and colour
Velvet photographs richly but traps heat outdoors. Linen and woven fabrics are cooler and better for gardens and tents.
Light colours widen the space and reflect light; dark ones frame well but absorb light and need a fixture aimed at the seating itself.
What to check before the night
Leg stability on the hall floor, fabric cleanliness under strong light, and at least a metre behind the seating for the photographer. All three are checked at installation, not after guests arrive.
