Emirati Folk Bands: When to Book One and How to Place It

A folk band is not a last-minute addition. It is the moment the volume of an event changes, and it needs space, timing and an agreed route decided before the night itself.
When to book one
Ayyala is usually asked for at one of three moments: welcoming guests at the entrance, the groom's entrance, or the close of the evening. One strong moment beats three short ones — a band that plays three brief times loses its effect.
For melcha and henna nights, a women's group or lighter drums suits better than a full ayyala: the space is smaller and sound inside a closed majlis becomes heavy quickly.
The space it actually needs
Ayyala forms two facing rows. Each row needs roughly a metre per performer, so a twenty-person group needs at least ten metres by four, plus a movement path in front.
The most common mistake is booking a large group for a hall that cannot hold it. Measure the space before fixing the number of performers, not after. If the entrance is through a corridor, that corridor needs at least three metres of width.
Sound: the band and the DJ do not overlap
Drums override any sound system. The DJ stops completely before the band enters and returns only after it leaves. Agree a clear cue between the coordinator and the sound operator rather than improvising on the night.
Photography during the performance
Movement is fast and lighting is usually low. Tell the photographer the entrance route and the expected moment in advance, and add light along that route — without it most frames come out blurred or dark.
