Sound in Enclosed Halls: Why Echo Differs From One Venue to Another

United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪 — elegant and practical event planning inspiration.

الصوت في القاعات المغلقة: لماذا يختلف الصدى من قاعة لأخرى

A complaint repeats after the event: "the sound was loud and we still could not make out the words." That is not a speaker problem; it is a room problem.

Speech reaches the ear twice: straight from the loudspeaker, and reflected off walls, ceiling and floor. When the reflection arrives late enough, the brain hears it as a second layer over the first — the level rises and clarity does not. Turning it up makes things worse, because it increases the reflection too.

Three properties of the hall decide this. Bare hard surfaces — marble, glass, smooth plaster — reflect more. A high ceiling lengthens the reflection time. And an empty hall reflects far more than a full one, which is why sound can seem excellent at rehearsal and poor once guests arrive, or the reverse.

The remedy is not bigger speakers but smarter distribution: several small sources spread closer to the guests beat two large ones at the front. The reason is simple — sound that travels less needs less energy, and less energy means less reflection.

What to ask before booking: ask the venue about ceiling height and wall material, and ask the supplier how many sound points they intend to distribute, not how many watts they will use. Watts are a marketing number; distribution is the engineering decision.

If the programme includes a zaffa, a speech or a marriage contract, ask for a dedicated microphone set up separately from the music. A microphone running on music settings produces unintelligible speech however good it is.

**Why the sound differs between rehearsal and the night**

Because guests themselves absorb sound. A hall holding two hundred people reflects far less than the same hall empty. A setup tuned in an empty room goes quiet once it fills — and the reverse is true if it was tuned full and the numbers drop. A professional supplier tunes for both and keeps two settings.

**The four most common mistakes**

Placing speakers behind the microphone, which produces feedback. Aiming all the sound at the centre of the room, leaving the edges faint and the middle loud. Running speech and music on the same settings. And leaving the level to whoever stands at the desk with no reference — the ear adapts within an hour and the level creeps up without anyone noticing.

**What to ask for in the quotation**

The number of sound points and where they go; a microphone dedicated to speech; an operator present throughout rather than someone who sets up and leaves; and a preset for the zaffa if it is in the programme.

**And if the hall is acoustically poor and cannot be changed?**

Bring the guests closer to the source, reduce the space in use with drapes or table layout, and lower the music during speech instead of raising the microphone. The remedies here are in distribution, not in equipment.
